Two of America's five most popular girls' names were the same name

In 1956 the second most popular girls' name in the United States was Debra. The fourth was Deborah. They are the same name.

The two spellings are tallied on separate lines by the agency that keeps the American count, so both could chart at once. That pairing shows up twice in a hundred years of birth records, in 1955 and again the year after. Deborah led the first time, and the respelling took the higher rank the second.

National Debra Day belongs to the second spelling. The first keeps its own date in December, six months away.

Debra Day history

INTRODUCTION

Debra is not a nickname. Reference works that call Debbie a diminutive of Deborah call Debra something else, a variant: a respelling of the full name rather than a short form of it. It carries diminutives of its own, Debbie among them.

The respelling is mostly the pronunciation written down. English speakers give Deborah either three syllables or two, while Debra has only the two-syllable form. The shorter spelling settles a question the longer one leaves open.

CHAPTER 01

A name that arrived at the top

The climb was abrupt. Before the 1950s, Debra sits outside the two hundred most popular girls' names on every American decade list. Then the decade's own table places it seventh.

Seventy years of earlier lists give no warning of it. The older form at least announced itself first, turning up on the 1940s table a full decade ahead. The respelling skipped that step.

CHAPTER 02

The five years the respelling won

One answer on offer is a screen credit. Debra Paget spent the decade in big pictures, among them The Ten Commandments, the top-grossing film of the 1950s. Her billing carried the newer spelling.

Nancy's Baby Names credits the spelling's particular success to Paget, and frames that as the author's own reading rather than a documented cause. What the counts show is plainer. For five years running, from 1956, more American baby girls were registered as Debra than as Deborah.

CHAPTER 03

What the record can and cannot date

The fall was as clean as the rise. Debra held a place on the decade lists through the 1970s and then dropped off them. It has not come back.

The day itself has a much thinner paper trail than the name. A search of presidential documents in the Federal Register returns nothing for National Debra Day. Where the name's rise can be pinned to the year, the day's beginnings cannot be pinned at all.

One line of federal methodology keeps Debra and Deborah apart.

The Social Security Administration states the rule plainly on its background page: "Different spellings of similar names are not combined." That single line is why Debra has never been folded into Deborah in the federal count, and why each holds a rank of its own.

CHOICE

Parents were picking a spelling, not just a name

In the 1950s table Deborah ranked fifth among American girls and Debbie fifty-fourth, with Debra sitting between them. Three versions of one name held three separate places, and the federal record kept score of exactly which one went on the form.

LEDGER

The split survives on the all-time list

Deborah ranks twenty-fourth among the most common American girls' names of the last hundred years, and Debra is the only other spelling of the name anywhere in that hundred. Half a century after the fashion passed, the registry still files the two apart.
