A playing card that turned into a boy's name

National Trey Day belongs to a name that is really a number. World Athletics introduces the athlete who took Olympic decathlon silver at London 2012 as James Edward Hardee III, then adds that he is better known to the world as Trey Hardee. The nickname is not a shortening of anything; it is a count.

That count reached American babies late. Social Security's national files record no boy named Trey before 1948, when six were registered.

The day itself has no author. No founder, no proclamation and no organiser turns up anywhere in the record, which leaves a calendar entry attached to a word instead of a person.

INTRODUCTION

Before it was anybody's name, a trey was something you could hold in your hand.

English took the word in the late 1300s for the three-spot on a card, a die or a domino, out of the Old French treis and the Latin tria behind it. It arrived inside a whole spoken counting series that players once used at the table: ace, deuce, trey, cinque, sice.

CHAPTER 01

A word you could deal

The counting series did not stay at the card table. The exact phrase ace deuce trey sits on 1,251 pages of the Library of Congress newspaper archive between 1880 and 1947.

A 1923 South Bend News-Times report describes a hand as the ace, deuce, trey of diamonds and the five of spades. A 1945 California Eagle bill advertises a dance trio billed as Ace Deuce and Trey. The word was doing ordinary work in print long before any parent reached for it.

CHAPTER 02

From a counter to a christening

The jump went through families, not through fashion. Wiktionary lists Trey first as a nickname for the third person in a family sharing his father's name, and only then as a given name derived from that nickname.

So the word did not stop counting when it became a name. It changed what it was counting, from pips on a card to men in a line, and the suffix III is the same fact written another way.

Once inside the registers the name rose for half a century and has fallen since. It has never entered the American top hundred in any year on record.

CHAPTER 03

A day nobody signed

The observance has no such paper trail. The Federal Register carries no document naming it, and the UK Parliament's Hansard record returns nothing across every category it indexes.

One origin story does circulate, that the day was formally established in 2016. No source consulted for this page carries it, and the earliest thing that survives is an archived listing from August 2022, which dates a web page rather than an observance.
