Ken never matched that total again. It has not come near that level since the mid 1960s.
A ninth century king called Cináed mac Alpin united the Scots and the Picts. English often renders his name as Kenneth, which would be tidy if his were the only Gaelic name that landed there.
It is not. English also turned Coinneach into Kenneth, a different name that goes back to Old Irish Cainnech and the root caín, meaning handsome, beautiful, good. Behind the Name calls the two originally unrelated.
The merger leaves no single answer to what Ken means. One ancestor points to beauty. The other is read as Old Irish cin plus áed, fire, though the same reference allows that it might actually be Pictish.
Kenneth stayed largely Scottish until a novelist got hold of it. Walter Scott gave the name to the hero of his 1825 novel The Talisman, and Behind the Name credits that book with popularizing it outside Scotland.
America took the long form first. Kenneth is in the United States birth record from its opening year, 1880, while the clipped Ken does not appear until 1900, and then only seven times.
Ken climbed through the middle of the century and turned in 1960. It has fallen away since, unevenly rather than in a straight line. The long form held on far better, and Kenneth still went to 1,148 American boys in 2025.
The name has a paper trail running back more than a thousand years. The observance has none. Searching the federal record returns nothing under the name.
What survives is a floor, not an origin. The earliest traceable listing of the day was archived in August 2022, and it named no founder either. No source found gives a reason for the date.
